FAQ's
People want to know:
How does the filter work?
The filter element is made from activated carbon. Hundreds of tiny sheets of carbon are entrapped into a casing, absorbing microplastics, chemicals, dirt and toxins before it reaches you.
The filter has to be changed every 200L. If you are using your Hydroco on a daily basis, we recommend changing the element every 2 months.
To change the filter, you simply remove it from the inside of the straw by twisting anti-clockwise, then twist the other way to fit the new one.
What does the Hydroco filter remove?
Our activated carbon filter removes chlorine, PFAS ("forever chemicals"), microplastics, heavy metals (like lead and mercury), pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other common tap water contaminants.
Does it improve the taste of water?
Yes! The Hydroco filter removes chemicals that cause bad taste and odors, giving you fresher, purer-tasting water with every sip.
How long does the filter last?
Each Hydroco filter is designed to purify up to 200 liters of water, depending on your local water quality. We recommend replacing it every 2 months for best results.
Can the filter remove bacteria or viruses?
No — Hydroco’s activated carbon filter removes chemicals, toxins, and microplastics, but it is not a microbiological purifier. It is designed for use with treated municipal tap water.
Will the flow rate slow down over time?
Slightly, yes — as the filter traps more contaminants, water flow can become slower. It's a good sign your filter is working and a reminder to replace it when needed.
How do I know when to replace my filter?
You may notice a slower flow rate, changes in taste, or simply hit the recommended 2 month timeline. We suggest setting a reminder or subscribing to our automatic filter replacement program.
Is the filter recyclable?
The outer casing is recyclable. However, used activated carbon cannot be recycled through regular curbside programs. We're working on a filter recycling solution — stay tuned!
Is installation or setup complicated?
Not at all. Just soak the new filter in water for 5 minutes before first use, then insert it into your Hydroco bottle. No tools or complicated setup required.
Does the filter add anything to the water?
No — it only removes unwanted contaminants. Hydroco filters don't add minerals or chemicals to your water.
Can I use the filter with any type of water?
Our filters are optimised for treated tap water. They are not designed for seawater, river water, or microbiologically unsafe water without additional purification.
